Stupid foreigner question

Viesti Kirjoittaja rots »

Hi,

Apologies for the english and no doubt common question - my finnish is pretty rudimentary at the moment, so reading the FAQs is a little challenging.

I'm moving to Espoo (near Leppavaara) from the Netherlands in a few weeks time, and will be bringing my '05 SS with me.

I'm therefore looking for an (independent) Saab specialist who can do the maintenance and service the coming years. Someone who speaks reasonable English would be nice, and clearly someone who is serious enough to have invested in a Tech-II.

Can you recomment anyone?

Also - Tulli requires the usual test & inspection to be carried out within five days of arrival - can that be done at any garage?

Thanks,

Edwin

In Finland our inspection system is separate from all garages/workshops. I tried to find if some of them had their websites in english, but the result is: Nothing 8O Maybe they believe that only finnish-speaking people face the inspection process :D

This company has some kind of listing of their stations to help you:

I just hope that the station you will visit would have at least one english-speaking inspector...

Hi,
welcome to the forums, and eventually in a few weeks, to Finland :)
Not too sure about english fluency, but a good Saab service/mechanic in Espoo is Torek-Auto.
http://www.torek-auto.fi/torek/
I don't know if they havee Tech II, actually, but that's not a problem. If you need one, you can go to Saab-dealer, and there are also other (cheaper) Tech-II options to be found via this Forum.

About the inspection that Tulli requires, I guess you are registering your car to Finnish plates? If so, you need to do a "maahantuontikatsastus" at a "katsastusasema" with a hefty price-tag of around 200€, regular garages are not allowed to do the MOT checks. Again, welcome to Finland, where we live still in the 1970's when it comes to private motoring :D OK, back to topic...I would recommend Kehän Autokatsastus for the inspection, they are open mon-fri 08:00-16:00 during the summertime

Thanks for all the tips! I'll get started on the process. It seems quite long, but cars in Holland are still (marginally) cheaper than in Finland, so I guess it's worth the effort.

So you are going to register your car to Finland, did you check about the taxes carried when registering brought abroad to Finnish plates?
What I've heard, cars in Netherlands are not so cheap, you have some heavy taxes also?

Yep - I will register it in Finland. I've owned the car for more than six months, and I haven't lived in Finland in the past 12 months, so I can bring it in untaxed as part of my household items.
Well, I think that technically, I get taxed and then I get a tax credit which cancels out.

Cars in the Netherlands aren't very cheap e.g. when compared to Germany, but it still seems to be a little cheaper. It's hard to compare what I paid because I traded in another car, but the garage was asking (before negotiation) €15k for a '05 1.8t SS with 75k on it last year, including 6 months warranty.

Ok, I see. It goes how you wrote, you have to fill in form for customs and you get the decision for tax deduction when moving in with car. Remember though that either you of one person from your family has to be in the car while it's is driven until you have owned the car at least 3 years from which minimum 2 years in Finland.

I have quite similar situation within 6 months time :)

Torek-auto can do Saab service. It's located in Viherlaakso, pretty close to Leppävaara.

Excellent - thanks for all the recommendations.

My wife called Kehän Autokatsastus and got someone on the line whose english was excellent, so we're off to a good start.

Got a call from the local Defa dealer and they informed me the block heater arrived today, so my local garage is going to install that on Monday. I went for the one that plugs into the radiator rather than the one that bolts onto the oil pan - just struck me as a more sensible arrangement.

Don't know about Defa in Finland, but order lead times here are just stupid: in the 21st century, there is no excuse for a 3 to 4 week lead time if the manufacturer has it in stock :(

Great. To simplify the stuff that you can find also from wesku's link:
1. You need to report with your car to customs at the point of entry to FInland. I guess you are coming by ferry, so you report to customs office at the ferry harbour.

2. From there you will get detailed assistance also from customs officer, but a short guideline anyways, presuming your car has valid EU-country register plates AND insurance (how else would you be able to drive the car to the ferry at the departure harbor :) ).
With those, you report your car in customs and declare your intention to register the car permanently to Finland and your intention to drive with it during the registration phase (simple, one A4 paper to fill), and you will receive a tremporary permission to use your car in Finland for 3months.

3. Then, while waiting custom's decision you must perform the "maahantuontikatsastus", which you have already booked from Kehän Autokatsastus (I presume), from which you will receive documents that will entitle you to register the car to Finland (together with custom's taxation decision). Then, while waiting for customs to declare you car taxation, get your car insured in Finland (for example http://www.tapiola.fi, http://www.lahivakuutus.fi, http://www.if.fi or whatever insurance company you can find by google from Finland), you can get insurance for the chassis number, and it will automatically convert to the Finnish registration plates when you receive them.

4. When you receive the custom's tax decision, then you can go with that and with the papers you received from maahantuontikatsastus, and get you Finnish registration plates and (final) registration documents from "katsastusasema" (i.e. Kehän Autokatsastus, or whatever katsastuasema you can find) with approx 20€. You can leave the Finnish insurance also to this point, but you must have a valid Finnish insurance before you can get the plates. Taking an insurance takes about 10minutes (max) on the phone, and then some minutes to "pop up" in the Trafi (official bureau for car bureaucratics and what not...) IT systems.

I hope this helps and that I did not make too many mistakes here (I imported a "car" a.k.a Volvo tractor as a moving in goods about a year ago from Italy)

A matter of demand and offering, I guess. Pretty much all car spare part/accessory shops have Defa (or Calix) components on the shelf here, or are able to order in and get the specific components within 48 hrs :)
