Re: Belgialainen Saab
"Saab was the first one to assemble cars in Belgium. The help of the local Belgian agency did this in 1959. But in 1960 this agreement was terminated and the assembling of cars ended in Belgium.
In 1973 Saab-Scania started to assemble cars in Mechelen. This was made in co-operation with a Belgian general agent and lasted until the year 1977. Saab-Scania’s purpose for this time was to increase car production volume there. On the background there was one possible reason why Saab opened the assembly plant in Mechelen. At that time NATO-countries including Belgium were planning to buy new fighters. Saab-Scania provided its Viggen-fighter to NATO-countries and assembling plant in Mechelen can be seen as Saab-Scania’s attempt to provide incentives to NATO countries to buy Viggen fighters. But NATO never bought those Viggen-fighters. This can be seen as one reason for closing the plant in 1977. The assembling also acted badly in Mechelen and when the conditions on the markets became worse, Saab-Scania had to close down the plant."
