General Motors has decided to build a new small Cadillac car aimed at European drivers in its Swedish Saab factory, in a move likely to lessen fears that the plant could be closed.
GM has been considering whether to go ahead with the car since the summer but has now given it the green light, with volumes estimated by one insider at 30,000 to 50,000 cars a year.
The vehicle, expected to start production by the end of the year, will be shown in a near-final version at the Geneva motor show in March. It shares its structure with the Saab 9-3, meaning it can be built on the same production line with relatively little investment.
The new small Cadillac is designed to support the relaunch of the American luxury brand in Europe after years of negligible sales. Excluding the new small car, Cadillac hopes to reach 20,000 sales a year in Europe by the end of the decade, double its forecast just a few months ago.
GM wants to turn Cadillac into a global brand, and is preparing the ground for production in China and considering introducing sales networks in Australia and South Africa. It is also considering how to add diesel engines - vital for Europe, as half of all cars sold in the region are diesel-powered - to its line-up. Options include buying them in from Fiat, BMW or Isuzu, or developing them internally.

Cadillacilla ja Saabilla on totaalisen erilaiset asiakaskunnat, toi Luxury lause on tullu ihan tässä vuodenvaihteen tienoilla Saabusa:n sivuille.
Niin ja pikku Cadillac on arvioiden mukaan varsin erilainen kuin 9-3, mikään rebadge se todellakaan ei ole ja GM johto oli suorastaan vihainen kun toimittaja edes vihjaisi siihen suuntaan.
Cadillacilla on hyvin itsenäinen suunnittelupuoli ja GM fanit pitävät itsestäänselvyytenä, että Cadillac saa aina parhaat moottorit ja vaihteistot ja niitä ei saisi antaa muille tai Cadillacin status laskee.
GM fanit eivät esimerkiksi halua pikku Cadia USA:han, ettei taas se imago ole vaakalaudalla kun pieni auto on kuulemma kokonaisuutta halventava juttu....

DETROIT -- Saab remains a valuable brand for General Motors, the head of the carmaker's European division said on Tuesday, dismissing a newspaper report that the Swedish unit's future might be in doubt.
"Saab is an important brand for General Motors. It is the only entry premium brand globally, it is one of the few global brands we have, it is almost 100 percent conquest sales for General Motors. So it is of very high importance for us," GM Europe Chairman Fritz Henderson told reporters at the North American International Auto Show.
But he added that GM was looking for ways to improve performance at Saab, in part by expanding its product range.
"Having a two-product global brand is not a recipe for success," Henderson said.
Henderson said GM Europe would announce in the first quarter whether it will build its next-generation mid-size car at a Saab plant in Sweden or at an Opel plant in Germany. He declined to say which plant had the inside track for the job.
He also said GM was looking at ways to make future production more flexible, perhaps by building some European brand cars in North America.
"You do that typically when you look at new products and new architectures. I think over time we will do more of that. I have been asked the question before: do you have to build all Saabs in Sweden? The answer is no. You can build Opels in Sweden, too," Henderson said.
On other subjects, he said GM was reviewing its options for introducing diesel motors to its Cadillac cars in Europe, where diesel is much more popular than in the U.S. market.
"Buying one from BMW is an option. It's not the only one," he said.
He reiterated that GM expected a flat Europe market this year but aimed to boost its market share. GM had around 9.5 percent of the market in 2004, marginally more than in 2003.
