Carman&Nokia

Carman application enables car hobbyists and tuning addicts to monitor their car’s behavior like measuring car acceleration. It helps the car enthusiast with malfunctions as the application shows the fault codes with explanations and live data like engine load, car speed, engine RPM and time advance, just to mention a few. The Carman display can be placed on the car dashboard where it offers useful information of the car.

This open source software package is a On Board Diagnostics (OBD)-II analyzer for the Maemo (for N800 and 770 Nokia Devices) platform. OBD is a system used on cars to monitor different components and parameters. Monitored information is then utilized and shown for the user by the Carman application.

Carman was designed and developed in cooperation with Nokia Advanced Development Unit from Nokia Research Center and Nokia Technology Institute (INdT) in Brazil .

“Carman is a good example of open source possibilities in many levels. It gives both useful and fun use cases for the Internet Tablet which can be leveraged in marketing and further innovation also by Nokia. We hope that this application attracts car enthusiasts and developers in a new way”, says Markku Pulkkinen from Internet & Communication Solutions team of NRC.

Further development for the application is welcomed and the Carman project team extends an invite to the open source community to get involved.

To use Carman, the user needs a Nokia Internet Tablet 770 or N800, OBD- II compatible car (model 1996 or above) and OBD-II adapter with Bluetooth support.

Ainakin toistaiseksi Carman on todella tarkka adapterin suhteen, alunperin tehty ElmScan5 ja RS232-BT palikalle, joku on testannut CarPal-nimisellä palikalla ja sillä _ilmeisesti_ toimii, itse hommasin jonkun OBD-BT palikan eBaysta, oliskohan ollut "ELM-327 Bluetooth" eikä tahdo toimia ollenkaan. Ei saa muodostettua yhteyttä.

Varmasti yhteensopivuus paranee ajan myötä, mutta ainakin toistaiseksi kannattaa harkita tuota testattua ja toimivaksitodettua setuppia, jollei johdot häiritse. Carmanin sivuillakin mainitaan tuo testattu setuppi, ja scantoolin hinnastossa näyttäis löytyvän hintaan $199
